BSA Training for Adults in the Troop or Crew
In order to provide quality programs for the youth, it requires a large number of trained adults. The Boy Scouts of America provides on-line training programs for you to take. Troop 37 recommends these courses for all adults:
- Youth Protection Training - every two years. Required on every Tour Plan.
- Weather Hazards - every two years. Required on every Tour Plan.
- Fast Start Training - online only. An overview of the Scouting program and your specific responsibilities.
- This is Scouting - online only. An introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, methods and funding.
- Scoutmaster/ASM Position-Specific - Specialized knowledge for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters -OR- (choose #4 or #5). Note: after clicking the link, scroll to bottom of Council Training Courses page and make a choice from the "Please Select a Program" drop-down menu to get started.
- Troop Committee Challenge - available online. Specialized knowledge for committee members. After the committee members complete this step, they may wear the Trained patch.
- Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills - Required outdoor training for Scoutmasters and ASMs. The training is based on the outdoor skills in the Boy Scout Handbook. On completion of this step, Scoutmasters and ASMs may wear the Trained Patch. Note: after clicking the link, scroll to bottom of Council Training Courses page and make a choice from the "Please Select a Program" drop-down menu to get started.
Your BSA training will be tracked under a MyScouting account that will use your email address as a login name. It will record when you complete a course and will allow you to view your training status and see when you need to take re-fresher training.
Here are a set of steps for you to take the on-line training. There are many other ways to get to this material, but these steps are somewhat simplified and have been tested as of 08-May-2009.
PLEASE NOTE: the on-line training programs include audio, so it is best if you have speakers or head phones that work. But if you don't have them, I would try to take the courses anyway. With out the audio you may see that the presentation slows or stops, just assume that an audio portion is being played.
1) Go to http://www.scouting.org/
2) click on the "MYSCOUTING"

this takes you to the "MyScouting Login" Page.
3) MyScouting login or account creation
click on the link under "New to MyScouting"

The next page is titled "UPGRADE E-LEARNING ACCOUNT..."
you don't have any previous training so just click the "No" button
and the "Submit"

On the next page, enter your name, and choose the Pacific Skyline Council
(031).

you don't have a member number yet (and might never need one), so leave it blank, and click
"Submit"

Then there is another registration page to fill in contact info.
After that page you will able to take the courses.
PLEASE MAKE NOTE of the user name (probably your email address) and password.
4) in the left column, click on the "E-LEARNING" link

5) now click the "General" tab and you can see the Safe Swim and Safety Afloat classes.

The courses are self paced and there is audio that is helpful but if you don't have headphones or speakers you can probably get through it.
5) after you take the 1st class, you might see a different display of the classes, find the other courses you need in the center column, about 4th one down.

Or you can logout and come back later to do the next class.
When you finished with the courses you need, follow the "E-LEARNING" link back to the list of classes.
The yellow circles should have changed to green to indicate you have completed the course.
There should be a hot link next to your classes (on the General Tab) that says "View Certificate".
Please view it, right click and save to a local htm or pdf file. Save it to a name like "YourNameFirstLast_SafteyAfloat.htm" or "YourNameFirstLast_YPT.htm". Then send each of the certificate files to training@troop37.info .
Unless you send the certificates to the Troop we wont know that you have taken the course.
The BSA system does not currently forward any information to the Troop.
